Experiment with a not-quite-new technique: wet felt a creature-sized skin and fit it on, with slits for the ears and teased openings for the eyes. Many creatures have partial wet-felt hides, but this is the first to get the whole thing. It worked well enough, but smaller patches are way easier to control....
